Increase Holiday Spirit with Some Holiday Spirits
By Andrea Boyle
The holidays are a time to gather together with the family and enjoy one another’s company. Many families like to enjoy a few cocktails together. Some drink because they really take joy in spending time together and it helps everyone to lighten up a bit. Others drink because it’s the only way they can get through the holidays. After all, we don’t get to choose our families; we are stuck and just have to deal with them. Holiday parties are common and a fun way to spend time with friends you care about and they are often filled with a wide variety of food and drink options. Whatever your reasoning behind enjoying seasonal cocktails, there are plenty of options to suit your taste.
Hot cocoa, apple cider, and coffee are common components of warm holiday drinks. Add a little spice to your life with a Mexicabo Hot Chocolate. It can be created by mixing 1 ½ oz. Cabo Wabo Blanco Tequila, 4 oz. hot cocoa, ½ oz. coffee liqueur, and topped with whipped cream. You’ll be sure to warm up on a cold winter’s night with a Bailey’s Peppermint Cream created with 1.5 oz. Bailey’s with a Hint of Mint Chocolate, 4 oz. hot chocolate, fresh whipped cream, crushed candy cane, and a mint leaf garnish. Hot apple cider can be mixed with a variety of spirits. One delightful option is to mix apple cider with Buttershots butterscotch schnapps.
Not everyone likes to drink hot cocktails, especially at crowded parties or get-togethers that tend to heat up quickly. But there are still many options for cold drinks that are still festive in nature. One popular option is the Bellini cocktail, made from sparkling wine and peach puree mixed to your liking. For a more flavorful drink, try a La Vie En Rouge by mixing 1 ½ oz. Grand Marnier, 1 ½ oz. fresh pressed cranberry juice, ½ oz. fresh lemon juice, ½ oz. simple syrup, and a garnish of fresh rosemary. Candy canes make great additions, and add a festive touch, to mint-infused cocktails. They can be used as stir sticks or crushed and added to the rim of glasses.
Share the spirit of the season with some holiday shots. Try a Polar Bear by mixing ½ oz. white crème de cacao and ½ oz peppermint schnapps into a cocktail shaker filled with ice, shake well, and strain into a shot glass. If you’re looking for a kick in the pants, try a Snowshoe. Made by mixing ¾ oz. Wild Turkey Bourbon and ¾ oz. peppermint schnapps, this shooter will warm you up quickly. For a shot reminiscent of your favorite dessert, try a Hot Apple Pie made from 1 part Bacardi Big Apple Rum, ½ part Hot Damn Cinnamon Schnapps, and a glass topped with a graham cracker rim.
If you’re looking to serve a large crowd all at once, consider a cocktail punch. For a festive and simple crowd-pleasing option, consider a Cranberry-Vodka Punch. Mix together 4 cups cranberry juice cocktail, 2 cups orange juice, 2 cups vodka, 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 tablespoons Grand Marnier, ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon ground allspice, 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg in a punch bowl. Add ice cubes and 2 thinly sliced oranges. Who could forget beloved Wassail? Your house will fill with the warm inviting scents of cinnamon and cloves as it cooks on the stove. Try Pineapple Wassail by mixing 4 cups unsweetened pineapple juice, 1 12oz can apricot nectar, 2 cups apple cider, 1 cup orange juice, 1 teaspoon whole cloves, 3 cinnamon sticks broken, with a garnish of orange wedges and whole cinnamon sticks.
