A Girl's Guide to Buying Lingerie
By Kayli Vichez
It's unfortunate that most women would spend hours choosing clothes that would look miserable because of ill-fitting undergarments. Even fashion experts like Tim Gunn puts emphasis on the importance of having the right undergarments and lingerie as a foundation for a great wardrobe. Here I'm going to show you tips from how to get the right size lingerie, the different types of lingerie to some from-one-girl-to-another lingerie advice.
The Right Size
Getting the right measurement for your lingerie is crucial because a great fit is what lingerie is built on. Following the expert tips of Tomima Edmark of HerRoom.com, we need to get two measurements to find our bra size.
- First to get the band size, exhale all air in your lungs first and measure under your bust with the tape measure parallel to the floor for a more accurate read. Once you've done this, add four inches to the measurement if you get an even number and five inches if it's odd.
- Second, determine your cup size by measuring the fullest size of your breast. When you do this, make sure that you're wearing a non padded bra to get the best read. Also keep your arms to your side and stand tall before measuring.
- Third, subtract your cup size measurement to your band measurement. If you get a 1, you're an A, a 2 and you're a B, a 3 and you're a C, and so on and so forth.
- Finally, take your band measurement and the results of your subtraction and you'll get your bra size.
How to Care for Your Lingerie
- The simplest of all tips, and probably the most overlooked is to read the label. Manufacturers put the washing tips on that teeny tiny label to take better care of your garment. So before you snip that label, make sure to read it first.
- Rule of thumb is to hand wash undergarments or lingerie, but if you really need to throw it in the wash, make sure that the clasps are together so that it won't snag in the other clothes in the wash. Or better yet, put it in a wash bag before throwing it in the washing machine.
- Never put your lingerie in the dryer no matter how tempting. It ruins your both the delicate fabric of your lingerie as well as the elastic from the extreme heat.
A Few Lingerie Advice
- When you're buying your lingerie, treat it like you're buying your wedding lingerie. Shop like this and you'll more often than not, end up with a lingerie that makes you feel sexy. Never wear something that makes you feel otherwise.
- Spice it up a little bit more by creating a mood, wear killer heels, light up some scented candles and blast some Marvin Gaye.
- Try on different kinds of lingerie. You may want to go sexy with some black French lace today, but tomorrow how about some silk pajamas? Keep your partner guessing.
